THEM! is a classic monster movie. Set in the time just after WWII, it was one of the first of the atomic mutation movies that brought a new horror to the big screen. The story was:
“The earliest atomic tests in New Mexico cause common ants to mutate into giant man-eating monsters that threaten civilization.”
Originally made in 1954, the special effects still stand up. Most of the giant ants were quite well-made puppets. The sound effects of the ants were great and, as a kid, genuinely had me hiding behind the sofa. Well, it is getting a remake.
At first, I was rolling my eyes and annoyed at how Hollywood is again scraping the barrel to find something else to dump on. However, this remake is going to be made by Michael Giacchino. He is the Oscar-winning composer of Up!
He is also the director of Werewolf by Night, which I did a review on and I really liked. For me, it went back to that old-school feeling of a Universal Monster movie and it was fun. Giacchino said about this new version of Them!:
“There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head. For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age.
What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them!. It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie.”
He will also be composing the movie as that’s what he loves doing. At the moment the movie is just in the scripting phase, but I’m going to keep an eye on this since it might be something to look forward to.
I mean, I’m not holding my breath, but it’s something.
