The channel formerly known as Sci-Fi, now doggedly sticking to SYFY, has premiered the full-length trailer for their new series The Ark. It will hit the network on February 1st and stream via Peacock the next day.
It is set 100 years in our future as planetary colonization missions are humanities guarantee for survival. Ark One is the first of these missions and, according to the blurb:
“Ark One encounters a catastrophic event, seriously damaging the ship and killing off many of the key crew.
With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of themselves and band together to stay on course, survive the unseen forces threatening them, and complete the mission of colonizing a distant planet our species may call home.”
This is a return to Sci-Fi/SYFY of Stargate talent Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner. They have previously worked together on The Outpost on The CW. Here they will be co-showrunners.
The show was shot in Serbia, a low budget location. Some of the CG on display in the trailer looks determinedly TV level. In a world where shows From House Of The Dragon to The Expanse are putting movie-level VFX on the screen for extended runs, is there a place for this lower tier production anymore vs. the might of streaming giants and their huge budgets?
We will see, but SYFY has a terrible record of seeing shows through which, in turn, makes it hard to make the case to make the commitment.
The cast includes Christie Burke, Richard Fleeshman, Reece Ritchie, Stacey Read, Ryan Adams, Christina Wolfe, Shalini Peiris, Miles Barrow, Pavle Jerinić, Tiana Upcheva and Lisa Brenner. This first season of the show is set for twelve episodes.
