How To Make a Study in Dwarf Fortress

admin2021January 7, 2023

To work efficiently, administrator dwarves need studies in Dwarf Fortress. These rooms are known as Offices and require a specific furniture piece.

Similar to real life, those working in management, bookkeeping, or other administrative professions in Dwarf Fortress will need a study or Office to handle their workload properly. Of course, it is possible for such characters to carry on with their duties without a designated room for their work, but this oversight will cause them to become unsatisfied with their conditions. Eventually, these dwarfs might become verbally or physically hostile to their clan or refuse to take orders from the player protagonist’s input. Therefore, understanding how to build a proper study for one’s dwarves is essential for keeping certain occupations satisfied.

Before players can consider building a study for their dwarves in the Rimworld-esque colony sim of Dwarf Fortress, they must know whether a specific dwarf actually wants an Office in which to work. To see this information, players can navigate to the “Nobles and administrators” tab, which can be accessed by clicking on the crown icon on the bottom-left of the screen or pressing the “N” hotkey. In this UI window, players may see several dwarves with a red chair icon with the text indicator at the top that reads, “Needs: Decent Study.”

Once players have confirmed their noble and administrator dwarves are in need of a study in Dwarf Fortress, the next step is to designate a space or create an enclosed room for an individual dwarf’s Office. While it is possible for a study to cover a wide area used for other purposes, it is generally ideal to set aside a small or sizeable separate room for administrative workers in this indie colony sim. Next, players must select the tiles of the entire room and make sure they are set to Office. The study or Office icon is recognizable as a silver chair with a feather quill.

Once the room has been designated as Office space in Dwarf Fortress, players must build a chair or throne and place it within the study. Other objects and decor, such as tables and statues, can be placed later within the room to increase its appeal. However, a single chair will always be the bare minimum for a study’s creation. According to YouTuber Nookrium, placing a door at the room’s entrance will solidify the room’s existence as an Office.

Players should also make sure to assign their chosen dwarf to the room once it has been completed. Regardless if the unit is a bookkeeper or broker, their work will become much more efficient in Dwarf Fortress once they have a study.
