Farrell Talks THE PENGUIN – The Last Movie Outpost

admin2021January 8, 2023

HBO Max’s The Penguin has survived the DCU carnage and will start shooting next month. The HBO Max show, just like The Batman and Joker, is expected to remain outside whatever James Gunn and Peter Safran are working on. So Elseworlds? Or will Batman only enter the DCU in their Phase 3 or 4, when this has all come to an end?

Either way, Colin Farrell returns to the role. He was a revelation in The Batman, unrecognisable in his heavy prosthetics as Oswald Cobblepot. All we know is that it startes exactly where The Batman left off with part of downtown Gotham still flooded and a power vacuum left by the death of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother) has been cast as Carmine’s daughter Sofia Falcone, so all signs point to gang war struggle to fill that vacuum.

At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Variety caught up with Farrell to ask about the series.

He says it wasn’t planned in any way, and they had no idea the character would be getting a series when he joined the film. The idea for the show just grew as they got to grips with the character and they wanted to do more with him.

“The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to. Because there was all this extraordinary work done by [makeup artists] Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.”

Honest to god, any thought I had about an extended series was to do with [makeup artist] Mike Marino’s work. I just knew there was so much to do with it – age it up, age it down. He’s just such a genius, Mike, so it was his work that was the inspiration, really.”

The limited series written by showrunner Lauren LeFranc and the first two episodes will be directed by Craig Zobel. Clark, Farrell, LeFranc, Matt Reeves, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan, and Rafi Crohn executive produce. Here is the full conversation:
